Most parents are painfully aware of how many sugary treats and snacks children eat.

For consciencous parents, it’s a tough battle to fight. Candy is everywhere. There must have been a latent desire for sweets that previous generations were eprived. Now that the dike has broken, sweets are the preferred choice. Parents pack candy in school lunches. Teachers reward students with candy. One parent even providing the rolled up type fruit candy as the “fruit snack” requirement for her child at a daycare center. We live in a sugar packed society.

Our choice of candy and sweets is just the tip of the iceburg, thought. A whopping 92% of the foods sold in America are processed with sugar. On average, Americans eat one cup of sugar each day; that’s 210 pounds in a year!

And what’s so bad about that? It’s not a nice story, but you need to know if you and your kids are going to be healthy for life.

For one thing, sugar robs our bodies of nutrients. Also, overdosing on sugars creates fatigue. So many children aren’t absorbing their lessons because their brains are blocked by too much sugar. Further, some experts have concluded that sugar is responsible for most of the colon problems we suffer. Not to mention the well-known fact that soft drinks and candy cause hyperactivity in children.

Here is a hard hitting suggestion for fighting back and turning the tide. If you are ready for better health, make a serious blow at the destructive sugary trend in our society:

Make your home a low- to no-sugar zone.

The target sugar-consumption level needs to be at about 180 grams per day (a little more that ¾ cup). That is the amount your body needs for peak levels of brain function and blood cell production.

And it isn’t that far from the average consumption level of 1 cup. So, here are a few steps you could take and you’re there!

Step 1. No candy allowed in the house. Take it to school, the office, or throw it away. Be ruthless. Especially, don’t leave it sitting out. Keep it in the freezer so you don’t see it if you must. But candy lying out in view is just too tempting. Save yourself the torment and get rid of it.

Step 2. Trash the refrigerator. Go through everything in your refrigerator and throw away and never buy again anything that has sugar listed as one of the first five ingredients. You will be amazed at how many items are offenders. Check out your salad dressing. Corn syrup in mine. Why does salad dressing need corn syrup? I found one without any sugar at all. And it’s delicious.

Watch for these names for sugar: sucrose, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, etc. Just don’t buy it. Read the labels at the store and pick non-sugary alternatives. And don’t think that if the package says low fat or low salt that it is any better. Sugar is typically added in greater measure in these products to make up for the loss in flavor.

Step 3. Be sensible and practical – you have only ¼ cup of sugar at the least to eliminate from each member’s diet. If you are fitting in with more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and rice, and drinking more water, then you can have a bit of chocolate once in a while. And don’t panic if someone offers you a Lifesaver candy. Just keep track and enjoy. Or, know you have a very good reason to say, No thanks, if you really don’t want a piece of candy. You have a plan and you’re sticking to it.

Step 4. Think balance and remember the benefits – fewer headaches, more energy, better digestion, better nutrition, and feeling good about how well you are caring for yourself and your kids.

After following these steps you will know for sure that the foods you have in the house are good for your kids to eat. So that when they ask, you can say ‘yes’ with confidence.

Diabetes drug Avandia sited as causing death.

Diabetics need a better solution for their Blood Sugar concerns. A popular drug has been revealed as causing a significantly high risk of death. The drug: Avandia.

Congress took action today to investigate why Glaxo-SmithKline, the Avandia manufacturer, and FDA did not warm patients about the elevated risk of death associated with Avandia. In one study, the drug puts patients at a 43% increase in the risk of heart attack and a 64% increase in the risk of death from all cardiovascular causes.

"This is important because cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in diabetes and is responsible for between 65% and 80% of all deaths in diabetics," says Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic, lead author of the study released Monday by The New England Journal of Medicine.
